Different Types of Pipe Alloys You Should Know About

Pipe alloys are tubes made by combining two or more metallic elements. Why mix the elements? Well, mixing makes the pipe more durable, stronger, and rust-resistant. The alloys also work much better in harsh conditions (than standard pipes). 

These alloys are created because standard iron/carbon steel pipes can break under heavy stress. They can also rust due to temperature variations. In today’s article, we’ll talk about different types of pipe alloys and how they work. Let’s get started.

Copper Pipe Alloys

In copper pipe alloys, copper is used as the primary metal. Copper is a good conductor of heat and also naturally resists bacteria. 

Just like steel alloy pipes, they also come in different categories. Type K, Type L, and Type M are standard copper pipes. These are used in home plumbing. Type K has the thickest walls and so is used for underground operations. Type L is used for indoor water lines. Type M has the thinnest walls and so is used where there isn’t enough pressure. 

We then have a brass category that uses a mixture of zinc and copper. The bronze category is the last one that uses copper and tin and is very hard. 

Steel Alloy Pipes

In steel alloy pipes, iron and carbon are combined with metals such as nickel or chromium. They’re exceptionally strong and can easily handle high heat and pressure. There are also two types within the main category. These are low-alloy steel and stainless steel. 

The first type contains only 5% extra metals, which are commonly used in oil and gas pipelines. In the second type, an extra 10-30% chromium is added. This metal forms a protective layer that prevents rust of all kinds. These alloys are mostly used in chemical plants and food processing. 

Nickel Alloy Pipes

Here, nickel is combined with copper and chromium. It’s because nickel handles harsh acids and extreme temperatures better than any other metal. 

Monel type uses a copper-nickel alloy. It is tough and perfectly resists saltwater, which makes it great for ships. In the Inconel type, a chromium-nickel mixture is used. It never warps or deforms metals even in high-heat engines. 

We then have Alloy 20, which is made of chromium, iron, and nickel. It can easily withstand strong chemicals such as sulfuric acid.

Which Pipe Alloy Should You Use?

It comes down to your project’s unique environment, budget, and fluid type. Copper is a soft, bendable metal. It is also easy to shape around tight corners, so it is best for home water supply lines and refrigerators.

Then, steel and stainless steel are best for power plants and extremely high-pressure environments. It’s because it offers unmatched strength and rust resistance. 

The copper-nickel alloy works best in the harshest wet environments. Ship hulls and submarine piping can benefit from this.

Final Thoughts

The types we’ve mentioned above also vary widely in price, so it’s important to keep budget constraints in mind. An experienced engineer can help you make an informed decision on which type you actually need for your project.
